Men's Linen Co-ord Sets: How to Wear and Style Them

A men's linen co-ord set is a matching shirt and trousers or shorts in the same linen and shade, worn together as one outfit or split into separate pieces. Wear it together for a clean, tonal look on holidays and warm evenings, and apart when you want two outfits from one purchase.
A note before we start: at PehroDesign the men's range is currently shirts. A matching trouser or shorts set is a custom order, and we explain below how to ask for one. The styling advice applies to any men's linen set.
What is a men's linen co-ord set?
It is two pieces designed to be worn together: a shirt and a bottom, cut from the same cloth so the colour and texture match. Because linen has natural slubs and small variations in the weave, a set made from one cloth looks intentional in a way two similar pieces from different sources often do not.
How do you wear a set together?
Keep it simple. The whole point of a set is that the outfit is already decided, so let the fabric do the work.
- Same shade, top to bottom. A single colour looks composed. Natural, sand and other earth tones are easy to wear; darker shades such as black or navy look sharper in the evening.
- Roll the sleeves. On a long sleeve shirt, two turns at the cuff gives a relaxed line that suits linen.
- Keep accessories quiet. A leather belt, a simple watch and loafers or clean sandals are enough.
- Do not over-iron. Linen looks right slightly creased. Steam it, hang it and move on.
How do you wear the pieces apart?
This is where a set earns its keep. The shirt works over jeans, chinos or shorts, and the trousers work with a white tee or a different shirt. Two pieces become several outfits with very little effort.
A tip: wash the pieces together so they age at the same rate. Split pieces from a set can otherwise drift slightly apart in shade over time.
Which occasions suit a linen set?
- Holidays and beach evenings. A linen set is one of the most comfortable things you can pack for heat.
- Summer weddings and garden parties. A pale set with a mandarin collar reads polished without a jacket.
- Warm weather weekends. Short sleeves and shorts in one shade look put together and take no effort.
How should a men's linen set fit?
Linen needs more room than cotton, so a slightly relaxed fit looks and feels better than a close one. Our men's sizes are garment measurements taken with the shirt laid flat, not body measurements: lay a shirt you already like flat, measure it and match it to the men's table on the size guide. Our journal has a full guide on how a men's linen shirt should fit.
What fabric are our men's shirts made from?
Our men's shirts are cut from 100% OEKO-TEX certified European linen, roughly 200 gsm, pre-washed to reduce shrinkage. That weight gives a shirt some structure without bulk.
What should you avoid?
Avoid cutting a set too tight: linen has little stretch, and a close fit pulls across the shoulders and seat. Avoid pairing a set with heavy, shiny accessories, which fight the natural texture. And avoid washing the pieces on different cycles or at different temperatures, since that is the quickest way to end up with a top and bottom that no longer quite match.
Which colours work best for a set?
Tonal always works: one shade from collar to hem. We stock thirty-six shades of linen, and shade varies a little from one bolt to the next, so if an exact colour matters, write to us before you order. A safe route is to pick a neutral for the set and add colour with a tee, a scarf or a hat.
How do you care for a set so the pieces match?
Wash both pieces together, in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle, with a mild detergent. Dry them on low heat or hang them, and keep them out of strong direct sun while drying, which fades dye over time. Our garment care page has the full routine.
Set or separates: which should you buy?
Buy a set if you are packing for a trip or building a small wardrobe, since it gives you a finished outfit and extra combinations. Buy separates if you already own good trousers or shorts and only want the shirt. There is no wrong answer, only what you will actually wear.
Where can you start?
Browse the men's linen shirt collection. Good starting points are the mandarin collar linen shirt, the pure linen button-up shirt and the pure linen beach shirt.
If you want a matching trouser or shorts to go with a shirt, send us a photo of what you have in mind on the custom order page, along with the colour and your measurements. We come back with what is possible and a price before anything is cut.
Frequently asked questions
Do you sell men's linen co-ord sets?
The men's range is currently shirts. A matching trouser or shorts set can be requested as a custom order: send a photo and your details, and we reply with what is possible and a price before cutting.
How do I choose the size of a men's linen shirt?
Men's sizes are garment measurements taken flat. Lay a shirt you like flat, measure it and match it to the men's table on our size guide, or send your own measurements and we make it to them.
Should a linen shirt be tucked in or worn out?
Both work. Worn out and slightly loose suits a set with shorts or a relaxed trouser. Tucked suits a dressier evening look.
Do men's linen shirts shrink?
Linen can shrink a little in hot water or a hot dryer. Our men's shirting is pre-washed to reduce this, and cold or lukewarm washing with low heat keeps it to a minimum.
How long does a custom piece take?
We confirm the timing with the price before anything is cut. Our standard pieces take 2 to 5 business days to make, and standard tracked delivery takes 10 to 20 business days after dispatch.
